What a heat pump actually is
A heat pump is an air conditioner that also provides heat. Many people still call them ACs because they cool the same way a traditional air conditioner does. The difference is that when winter comes, they flip to heating mode and pull warmth from outside air rather than burning natural gas or heating oil. You’re probably comparing the wrong numbers
If you switched from an old AC unit and a gas furnace to a heat pump, your electricity bill is higher—but your total energy cost might be lower.
